Building Materials

Exercise : "My home, my space."

Learning Outcomes:
1. Recognize different types of materials and their properties.
2. Identify and describe the findings.

Project 1 : Materiality of SPACE: An experiential exploration

Learning Outcomes:
1. Produce a complete documentation and analysis of materials in respect to physical and chemical properties.
2. Identification of various types of building material (Finishes and Structural)
3. Understand the effects of building materials on aesthetics and structural qualities of a space or building.
4. Understand the appropriateness of material used in context several factorsoccupancy, concept, climate. .
5. Acquire analytical skill in understanding selection of building materials for a building/design.
6. Understanding of application/installation of material as finish and structural material (simple construction)

Project 2 : Integration

Learning Outcomes:
1. Apply the understanding of various types of building material which affects the tactile and chemical properties of design/building/space
2. Exploration and identification of various types of building materials and technology.
3. Understand the effects of building materials on occupancy, aesthetics and structural qualities of a space or building, environment and etc.
4. Produce drawings to visualize the architectural effects of proposed materials (spatial quality)

Architecture Culture & History 1

Learning Outcomes:
  1. Recognize and recall appropriate verbal architectural vocabulary when referring to building types, styles and periods.
  2. Exemplify the sequence of historical periods and how they are represented architecturally.
  3. Classify the sequence of historical periods and how they are represented architecturally.
  4. Produce building analysis which document intentions, concepts, patterns, disciplines, architectural language and contextual relationships.

Architectural Design Studio 1

Project 1: Representing me

Learning Outcome:
1. Identify and abstract theme/ideas of the 'self'
2. Construct a representational piece of art based on the initial ideas that have been abstracted and redefined through the process of translation and interpretation.

Self Potrait.

The dolphin in the picture defines who I am, in a way. A dolphin is friendly in the front but is very protective over itself. Batman symbolizes that I would put others infront of my needs while the Deathly Hallows (Harry potter) symbolizes something that is very dear to me, which is, friendship. The teal colour by the dolphin represents the ocean, as ocean is wide, free and wide open.

Project 2 : Me in Space

Learning Outcome:
1. Be able to identify and articulate basic design principles in space and form
2. Be able to distinguish and discem the role of scale and proportion in the relationship-between the human body and a designed space or enclosure.
3. Design and produce a space that embodies and expresses and idea or conceptual narrative.

Final model.
Prototype model
Preparing the base for the model
Preparing the Columns
Measuring the centre point.
Preparing the spike

We made the base strong enough for a person to fit into the model.
Interior
Model were show cased on the open air field.
Group mates for the project.

Project 3 : My City Dreamscape

Learning Outcome:
1. Design and produce a space that embodies and expresses an idea or conceptual narrative.
2. Be able to distinguish and discern the role of scale and proportion in the relationship between the human body and a designed space or enclosure.
3. Be able to identify, articulate and apply basic design principles in spatial organization and relationships.
4. Be able to select and apply materials to embody and enhance the sensory experience of the space.
5. Be able to create, articulate and illustrate the poetics of spatial quality.

We are suppose to create a character from a movie chosen, (in our case, TRON) and to create a hide out for the character

My character is an ISO (Isomorphic Algorithm) who escaped the mass murdering with 3 other ISOs and he hides himself in the security tower in the middle of the city as a Program. At night, while monitoring the TVs, he and the ISOs do some vigilante work, trying to take the city back bit by bit.

Cityscape model.
First prototype.
I wanted something more organic, and so I shaped up a cone.
The space provided was only 5m wide, so therefore I placed two walls on its side to the one below.

Prototype for final model

Tried using plastic for roof, isnt successful with bending it as it needs to be heated thoroughly.
Ended up using paper instead.

Final Model and how it looks like in the city-scape.

Design Communication 1

Project 1(A) : On-Site Sketching

Learning Outcomes:
1. Develop skills in visualizing of space through observation and perception of a given site
2. Develop skills in sketching as a mode of communication.

Project 1(B) : Tonal Values

Learning Outcomes:
1. Four variations of sketching techniques based upon your design studio prototype.

Project 2(A) : Orthographic Projections

Learning Outcomes:
1. Demonstrate drafting skills in modern and traditional methods of architectural drawing.
2. Record and present clear and legible architectural information manually.
3. Identify and apply architectural conventions and symbols.
4. Demonstrate in pencil and ink examples of:

  • Line types
  • Line weights
  • Line quality
  • Hand lettering

Project 2(B) : Axonometric Projection

Learning Outcomes:
1. Ability to express spatial ideas and architectural detail in three-dimension, in the format of an axonometric projection.
2. Understanding of what axonometric projections are, how to generate them and how to apply them to the design process and presentation.
3. Ability to produce legible architectural drawings.

Project 2(C) : Perspectives

Learning Outcomes:
1. Ability to express spatial ideas and architectural detail in three-dimension, in the format of one-point and two-point perspectives.
2. understanding of what perspectives are, how to generate them and how to apply them to the desin process and presentation.
3. Ability to produce legible architectural drawings with strong creative intent.

Through out Design Communication 1, I have learnt to communicate through design with skills such as inking, free-hand drawing, line weight, 2D and 3D technical drawings. By mastering the fundamental skills in this subject. I believe that it will be very useful to me in the semester to come, and also for my future reference.
