Architectural Design Studio 2

Project 1: Famous people, Familiar Faces

Tadao Ando

In project 1, we were asked to research and explore on the making of architectural elements, by observing an inspirational architect.

In a group of 5, we were asked to study Tadao Ando and his personal style of architecture, and to produce
  1. A short video presentation,
  2. 5 (6cm by 6cm) concept models with mixed mdeia based on the architectural understanding about the building.
By choosing the Church of Light,

These are the products we came up with:

Project 2 : Baywatch

In this project, we are to generate form and space through architectural concept, with the emphasis on exploring the user requirement.
In a group of 2, we were required to produce a series of detailed drawing (1:50 scale) as well as models for our watch tower.

Before coming up with the idea of the design, we were asked to come up with abstract art and also abstract model.

The final model are as below:

Project 2B - Retreat House

For the semester's final project, we were required to design a retreat house in Pantai Kerachut for our respective user, in which this case, a ranger. The aim of the building was to promote the usage of light, in this case, from light to dark.

Architecture Culture and History 2

Project 1: Research Analysis of Sultan Suleiman Royal Mosque

Learning outcomes:

  1. Better understand of building's history
  2. Ability to recognize and recall appropriate verbal architectural vocabulary when referring to building type, styles and periods.
  3. Ability to relate history with architectural context.
  4. Communication of the building from proper research

Environmental Sustainable Design (ESD)

Project 1: Green-go 2013 International Short Film Contest

Learning Outcomes:

  1. More aware of environmental conditions
  2. Explore the concepts of environmental and ecological sustainability
  3. Ability to recognize role and responsibility of an architect towards the environment and society

A short film to create awareness of Dolphin 'kidnapping'.

Project 2 - Appreciating Environment - Nothing is considered waste ( Group research Poster)

Learning outcomes:

  1. Ability to generate basic awareness for waste and environmental stress
  2. Ability to identify materials used for construction and categorise them into renewable and non-renewable.
  3. Ability to understand the life cycle of different materials.
  4. Ability to understand the importance & impacts of recycling.
Group research poster showing the amount of waste generated on-site, life cycle assesment and individual creative model using wastes from site.

Project 3 - Appreciating the environment (Nothing is considered waste) Individual creative Product

Learning Outcomes:

  1. Ability to produce a creative and meaningful object from construction waste.
  2. Ability to generate awareness and appreciation towards the environment.
  3. Ability to understand the importance of recycling and the reuse of waste materials.

Building Materials

Exercise : "My home, my space."

Learning Outcomes:
1. Recognize different types of materials and their properties.
2. Identify and describe the findings.

Project 1 : Materiality of SPACE: An experiential exploration

Learning Outcomes:
1. Produce a complete documentation and analysis of materials in respect to physical and chemical properties.
2. Identification of various types of building material (Finishes and Structural)
3. Understand the effects of building materials on aesthetics and structural qualities of a space or building.
4. Understand the appropriateness of material used in context several factorsoccupancy, concept, climate. .
5. Acquire analytical skill in understanding selection of building materials for a building/design.
6. Understanding of application/installation of material as finish and structural material (simple construction)

Project 2 : Integration

Learning Outcomes:
1. Apply the understanding of various types of building material which affects the tactile and chemical properties of design/building/space
2. Exploration and identification of various types of building materials and technology.
3. Understand the effects of building materials on occupancy, aesthetics and structural qualities of a space or building, environment and etc.
4. Produce drawings to visualize the architectural effects of proposed materials (spatial quality)

Architecture Culture & History 1

Learning Outcomes:
  1. Recognize and recall appropriate verbal architectural vocabulary when referring to building types, styles and periods.
  2. Exemplify the sequence of historical periods and how they are represented architecturally.
  3. Classify the sequence of historical periods and how they are represented architecturally.
  4. Produce building analysis which document intentions, concepts, patterns, disciplines, architectural language and contextual relationships.

Architectural Design Studio 1

Project 1: Representing me

Learning Outcome:
1. Identify and abstract theme/ideas of the 'self'
2. Construct a representational piece of art based on the initial ideas that have been abstracted and redefined through the process of translation and interpretation.

Self Potrait.

The dolphin in the picture defines who I am, in a way. A dolphin is friendly in the front but is very protective over itself. Batman symbolizes that I would put others infront of my needs while the Deathly Hallows (Harry potter) symbolizes something that is very dear to me, which is, friendship. The teal colour by the dolphin represents the ocean, as ocean is wide, free and wide open.

Project 2 : Me in Space

Learning Outcome:
1. Be able to identify and articulate basic design principles in space and form
2. Be able to distinguish and discem the role of scale and proportion in the relationship-between the human body and a designed space or enclosure.
3. Design and produce a space that embodies and expresses and idea or conceptual narrative.

Final model.
Prototype model
Preparing the base for the model
Preparing the Columns
Measuring the centre point.
Preparing the spike

We made the base strong enough for a person to fit into the model.
Interior
Model were show cased on the open air field.
Group mates for the project.

Project 3 : My City Dreamscape

Learning Outcome:
1. Design and produce a space that embodies and expresses an idea or conceptual narrative.
2. Be able to distinguish and discern the role of scale and proportion in the relationship between the human body and a designed space or enclosure.
3. Be able to identify, articulate and apply basic design principles in spatial organization and relationships.
4. Be able to select and apply materials to embody and enhance the sensory experience of the space.
5. Be able to create, articulate and illustrate the poetics of spatial quality.

We are suppose to create a character from a movie chosen, (in our case, TRON) and to create a hide out for the character

My character is an ISO (Isomorphic Algorithm) who escaped the mass murdering with 3 other ISOs and he hides himself in the security tower in the middle of the city as a Program. At night, while monitoring the TVs, he and the ISOs do some vigilante work, trying to take the city back bit by bit.

Cityscape model.
First prototype.
I wanted something more organic, and so I shaped up a cone.
The space provided was only 5m wide, so therefore I placed two walls on its side to the one below.

Prototype for final model

Tried using plastic for roof, isnt successful with bending it as it needs to be heated thoroughly.
Ended up using paper instead.

Final Model and how it looks like in the city-scape.

Model:

 Front
 Side and interior
 Bedroom (for 4)
 Monitoring room
 Office

Sid elevations, cross section and perspective view

Front and back elevation

Ground and first floor plan
